"Learn to write effectively" is a common refrain from organizational leadership. Over the last few years I have developed tailored materials to help technical professionals and analysts improve their writing. These workshops teach the basics of good composition with a focus on clarity and brevity. They are usually one day long, but I also offer them in shorter or longer sessions.
Many different organizations have found these workshops helpful to both their professional teams and their leadership. They include the Joint Staff J-7, Young Life, Army Material Command, TRADOC Analysis Center, the Military Operations Research Society, the Marine Corps Operational Analysis Division, and Joint Modernization Command.
A quick introduction: my name is Richard Hartney, and I lead the workshops. I retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, and I developed the materials and have led workshops since 2013. I taught at West Point, and I hold master’s degrees in both English and Industrial Engineering. As an Army aviator I learned the importance of brief, accurate communication, and I honed the art of to-the-point communication and writing in Ranger school and as the speechwriter to the commanding general of Multi-National Corps, Iraq.
